What is art deco and nouveau?

Works of art from between 1890 till the start of the first world war. It is characterised by decorative design in both architecture and painting often consisting of organic, asymmetrical and stylized flora and foliage. After the start of the first world war art took a turn towards more dark/serious subject matter.
