If a star explodes about 8,000 lightyears away does that mean it's exploding this very instant?

I mean, since it's 8,000 lightyears away, then that means it takes like 8,000 years for light to travel to our satellites that receive the images, right? So does that mean that the star ACTUALLY exploded 8,000 years ago and we are just receiving that information now?
